Chapter Description

Chapter 1, Framing the Issue, examines the ways and extent to which schools serve as hetero- and cisnormative institutions. Implications for queer youth and staff as well as straight allies are discussed. It offers a synthesis of past research and exposes prevailing conditions in K-12 schools as they relate to risk factors for queer youth, the impact of teacher influence, and curriculum and pedagogy.
