Reflection Questions

Chapter 1 Reflection Questions

  1. Think back to your earliest memory of gender difference. What was going on in that moment? Who was present? What values were attached to what you learned?
  2. What messages did you receive as a child and young student about homosexuality? Looking back, can you identity a hidden curriculum (i.e., unspoken and unofficial norms, beliefs, and values you learned from teachers, family, and/or friends)?
  3. How do you rate yourself and your institution on students’ experiences of hearing biased language, on experiences of harassment and assault, on discriminatory school policies and practices, and on the availability and impact of supportive school resources?
  4. How, if at all, do Sears’ five propositions for elementary classrooms challenge you to reconceptualize who, what, and how you teach?
