Olivia Murray is a Professor in the College of Education at Portland State University, where she has spent over 15 years designing curriculum and teaching elementary school teachers. Her academic and practical expertise spans restorative practices, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), multilingual education, and systemic equity. For Olivia, queer and trans advocacy is both the cornerstone of her professional identity and her daily lived reality. As a queer woman, spouse to a trans man, and parent to a nonbinary child, she is fiercely committed to gender-affirming care and creating safe, celebratory educational spaces. She bridges academic theory with community action through her book, Queer Inclusion in Teacher Education (Routledge), and “LGBTQ Advocacy in K-12 Classrooms”—a pioneering university course she designed and has taught since 2013. Whether she is leading the College of Education’s Queer and Trans Affinity group or advocating for her own family, Olivia’s mission is to dismantle narrow norms so that all youth can live authentically and thrive.
